Our Location

We work in the northern visayan sea, and aim to build a network of community driven marine conservation initiatives. Volunteers will mainly visit 2 islands:

Malapascua Island is a small and lively island. This is where People and the Sea has set up base in 2015, and has a very strong link to the community. This is where we tested and developed all our programs. The island is just 2.5 km long, it’s full of energy, white sand beaches, and local restaurants.

Higatangan Island is a 4 hours boat ride from Malapascua. It belongs to the Biliran Province , and it offers a peaceful contrast to Malapascua! Secluded and serene, it has limited electricity (from 3PM to 11PM), no restaurants and very little tourism activity. It’s a place to truly unplug, with untouched coral reefs and a close-knit fishing community that lives in rhythm with the sea.

Dive into Island Conservation

Shot over a two week stay, this video was filmed and edited by a past volunteer. While only very short, it gives a very nice flavour of the island, and just some of the activities that volunteers can get involved with. Enjoy!

9 month internship

“Working with PepSea has marked the start of my career. When starting, I told someone I’d be a completely different person by the end, and I already am. I have grown, learned, and experienced amazing things thanks to People and the Sea. By working on the reef surveys, COT removals, and engaging with the community, I’ve developed an incredible experience that I will always look back on with nostalgia and gratitude.”

2.5 month internship

Looking back on the internship, I can say that I definitely gained a lot of valuable experience. It was the first time I did a “long-distance trip” alone. At first, I struggled to get used to the new environment and overcome my shyness. I quickly became comfortable with the team and my host family. The working environment is very nice, and I grew to like the locals and my team. We always had good laughs with each other, and I never felt overly pressured or unable to communicate issues that I may have. My ideas were taken seriously, and working together really helped me gain experience. I think I was able to achieve most of my personal goals. One of them was, for example, to improve my academic writing, which I definitely practiced during my project. I also gained practical experience in obtaining information (observations, interviews).

This gave me a great experience!!!”

“Many people have told me that one month is not enough; I wish I could stay longer. Being part of this project has been a true blessing. Working with passionate individuals has been incredibly interesting, and I learned so much during my time here. Living in the community and spending time with the locals allowed me to connect with them, especially with my homestay family. If I had to rate my experience, I would give it a ten out of ten. The work being done with People and the Sea is impressive, and it’s evident how they positively impact the community. I had such a wonderful time with the team, my family, the children, and everyone I met on the island. The hospitality and kindness of the Filipinos made me feel at home at certain points.”
